So, we know from the last blog post, that Sports Therapists are slightly different from Physiotherapists, and that we can assist with many different musculoskeletal injuries and dysfunctions. Whether sports is a major part of your life, or you rarely get the chance to exercise, injuries can occur at unexpected times, and too often people are quick to assume that no treatment is necessary for optimal recovery.

With this post, I hope to help some of you understand that some injuries and circumstances can be helped and may benefit from Sports Therapy treatment/ rehabilitation. To do this, I am going to quickly list some of the most common complaints which we experience and can help with.

The first on the list is one which I guarantee at least 95% of you have experienced at some point in your life, and most likely, at some point within the last year. Lower Back Pain is incredibly common within both the sporting community and the non-sporting community and can be caused by a general lack of care (bad posture), and traumatic events (contact with another athlete). Defects and deformities of the Spine is also a cause of Back pain. Conditions such as Spondylolysis and Spondylolisthesis can cause havoc on the back, and one vertebra impacts another due to either genetic factors or repetitive trauma.

Due to how common running and jumping is within almost all sports, it is no surprise that Ankle and Foot injuries are some of the most common injuries which we face in ST. The relative weakness of the Ankle ligaments mean that ‘rolling’ the Ankle is a risk factor when walking down the road, let alone when we are making our body change direction at high speeds, forcing extreme forces through the joint. The number of bones within the foot also mean that fractures and dislocations, although rare, are still things to look out for, and something which we can help with.

If your sport involves a lot of Wrist action, then we can assist in long-term injury prevention methods which combat common wrist problems such as Carpal Tunnel and Arthritis. Within sports such as Tennis, Basketball and Baseball, sprains and tendonitis of the Wrist joint can be expected if you are not taking care before and after periods of exercise.

We (ST’s) are also able to help create plans for those who are going into surgery, whether it be for an ACL rupture, or a complete Hip replacement, we can take each case as it comes (with its own key details and history), and create a regime which can optimise the outcomes of the surgery. Some surgeries also require specific actions which are compulsory, and have to be done before surgery, again, we can and will take this into account to make it as simple as possible for you.

This is just a quick ‘overview’ of what Sports Therapists can over. If you are unsure about whether we can help or not, I am always contactable through the phone number and email address of Anytime Therapy.
